Clinical Description
G6PD is the most common inherited cause of hemolysis. Hemolytic episodes may be triggered by some drugs, fava beans and viral or bacterial infections.

Specimen Requirements
1 mL blood in EDTA lavender

Turn Around Time
Batched testing. Typcially run weekly.

Special Instructions
Testing includes hemoglobin level

Patients with recent RBC transfusion, acute hemolysis and reticulcytosis may show falsely elevated G6PD activity. If indicated, repeat testing after clearance of transfused cells or following recovery after the acute hemolytic evenet is recommended.

Processing Instructions
Whole blood; do not centrifuge. Specimens are delivered to Hematology.
