Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides comprehensive expertise and the most advanced technology in the region to care for critically ill newborns. We are the region's only Level IV NICU and provide a high level of capacity with more than 70 beds. 

NICU Staff

Our patients receive 24/7 care from a comprehensive team of clinical experts, including more than 20 neonatologists with a wide variety of clinical and research interests, more than 60 neonatal nurse practitioners, and more than 250 registered nurses. Families also receive support from social workers, nutrition specialists, a lactation team, respiratory technicians, and pharmacists.

Our services are supported by more than 400 pediatric newborn medicine subspecialists employed by Children's Mercy. This expertise includes the latest medical and surgical services along with a top-notch transport program to provide broad access to outstanding pediatric intensive care.
