Full-time employees on our unit work 3 12-hour shifts each week:
- 7:00 am-7:30 pm
- 7:00 pm-7:30 am
We also have part-time, PRN, and Weekend Option positions.
We have a Charge Nurse on each shift, who typically is not assigned a patient load. Our Charge Nurses are involved with managing the day-to-day operations of our unit.
We generally have a “resource nurse” available on every shift to assist others with procedures, transports, admissions, etc. The Resource Nurse does not usually take a patient assignment unless acuity is very high on the unit.
We have a staff-driven scheduling committee. We also have an ICN Nurse Council that recommends improvements and addresses concerns of the nursing staff.
Orientees are assigned 2 preceptors when hired, including 1 for days and 1 for nights. Orientees work 1:1 with a preceptor throughout the 4-month orientation before working independently.
During orientation, employees attend the CMHC Neonatal Course and receive training in:
- NRP
- IV therapy
- ventilator management
- developmental care
- ABG interpretation
- family and social support
- basic to advanced newborn assessment
Ongoing Staff Nurse training includes:
- quarterly unit updates
- annual competency training
- inservice education
Paid training is available to become a preceptor, improve leadership skills, obtain PALS certification, and more!
We hire Graduate Nurses. Refer to Orientation and Ongoing Training Opportunities for details.
