Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program

Welcome to the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program at The Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics (CMHC).  The Surgical Critical Care fellowship was established in 1998, and selects one applicant per year to fulfill its position which is fully accredited through the ACGME.  Since its inception all critical care fellowship graduates who have taken the Surgical Critical Care Boards have passed.  In addition, the Surgical Critical Care residents that have all desired to proceed into a career in pediatric surgery have matched into ACGME accredited pediatric surgery fellowships.

The Surgical Critical Care fellowship is a one year fellowship which is designed to train surgeons in the management of surgical critical care.  The primary emphasis is on pediatric surgical critical care, however, the finishing fellow is eligible to sit for the Surgical Critical Care boards which is primarily adult Surgical Critical Care.  The clinical and didactic training is intended to expand the knowledge of the fellow in all areas of critical care.  To this end, the fellow will rotate for nine months on the pediatric surgical service.  During this time they manage the critically ill neonates and the children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.  The remaining three months are spent off service.  One month is spent rotating on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, another month is spent rotating on the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and a third month is spent in the adult Surgical Critical Care unit at Truman Medical Center.

Regarding research, the Surgical Critical Care fellow is intimately associated with the research endeavors of the Department of Surgery.  These include multiple research projects in the arena of pediatric and neonatal critical care.

Finally, The Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics is a regional tertiary referral center.  The patient referral base for CMHC comes from six states.  Additionally, CMHC is consistently recognized as one of the top children’s hospitals in the United States.  The hospital itself has remarkable community support and because of this support we have been able to build a hospital that offers outstanding facilities combined with the latest in technology and patient care services in a beautiful family-friendly environment.
