The fellowship in Pediatric Pathology at Children's Mercy Hospital is a one year fellowship which is approved and accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) with the University of Missouri-Kansas City as the sponsoring institution. The fellowship provides a comprehensive experience in the field of pediatric pathology and will provide the graduating fellow with the experience necessary to enter an academic career. The program is designed to provide to qualified candidates who have successfully completed a 4 to 5 year general pathology program, one year of educational experience leading to special qualification in Pediatric Pathology by The American Board of Pathology.
Children's Mercy Hospital is the only tertiary pediatric hospital between St. Louis and Denver covers a 135 county region. The fellow will be exposed to every aspect of the field with a large number of complex cases. The program is designed to impart special knowledge and understanding of disease causality, natural history, and diagnostic, prognostic and monitoring techniques used in medical evaluations of the pregnant mother, embryo, fetus, infants and children. The program is also designed to lead to competence in applying and interpreting this knowledge as clinical circumstances warrant and in a fashion that expedites quality care in a cost effective manner.
There are comprehensive testing capabilities that fellows will be exposed to including immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, toxicology, cytogenetics, F.I.S.H., and transplantation pathology. The department of Pathology processes approximately 7500 surgicals, 40 autopsies, and 4000 cytogenetic samples per year and is staffed by 10 MD's and PhD's. Forensic and placental pathology rotations occur at 2 adjacent affiliated institutions including high-risk Obstetrical services.
