The Pediatric Radiology Fellowship Program offers a one-year fellowship position which is approved and accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The program meets or exceeds all requirements for Pediatric Radiology training, leading to CAQ eligibility by the American Board of Radiology. An organized program of training and self-education is planned for the fellow so that he/she will be successful in either a private practice or academic environment.
The fellow progresses through rotations in all imaging subspecialty areas including:
- General Radiology, inpatient and outpatient
- Fluoroscopy
- Cross-sectional body imaging including US, CT, and MR
- Interventional Radiology
- Nuclear Medicine
- Neuroradiology
These rotations provide the fellow with extensive experience in imaging pediatric pathology with the opportunity to effectively interact with referring physicians, members of the clinical team, patients, and parents. Radiology residents or medical students may also be assigned to the same service as the fellow, providing opportunity for the fellow to acquire more experience in the role of teacher and supervisor.
Daily work schedules and call allow the fellow to gain experience in performing procedures under staff supervision with graduated responsibility. All imaging studies interpreted by the fellow are reviewed with an attending radiologist facilitating daily one-on-one teaching sessions for the fellow. Additionally, the fellow participates in:
- Daily radiology resident and medical student teaching
- Weekly resident conference with all UMKC and rotating residents
- Inter-departmental conferences with the departments of Hematology/Oncology, Neonatology, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Pediatric Surgery, Gastroenterology, and Intensive Care
- Monthly Journal Club
The pediatric radiology fellow is expected to acquire or renew certification in both BLS and PALS. BLS and PALS courses are provided at numerous times during the year. Such certification is mandatory given the active involvement of the pediatric radiology fellow in sedation. The fellow is expected to become familiar with the departmental sedation policies and to assume the responsibility for sedated patients when needed.
