Abdominal Pain Program Initial Evaluation
Abdominal Pain Program Initial Evaluation

What should I expect during my first visit?

All new patients who have experienced pain longer than eight weeks in duration are evaluated jointly by Dr. Craig Friesen (M.D., gastroenterologist), and Dr. Jennifer Schurman (Ph.D., psychologist), reflecting the importance of integration of both the mind and body. Several nurses are also included in the interdisciplinary team and participate in these initial evaluations. This interdisciplinary team approach allows for a variety of perspectives and techniques to contribute to improving the health and functioning of the patient.

As part of your child's first visit, we will complete a detailed history and physical exam. In addition, you and your child will be asked to complete several questionnaires to evaluate issues related to sleep, thoughts, feelings, behaviors, coping skills and interactions with others that may contribute to the onset and/or maintenance of abdominal pain. Together, the medical, psychological, and social information gathered helps us to develop a personalized evaluation and treatment plan for your child.

A new patient evaluation often takes two hours or more to complete. You will leave this visit with a plan designed for your child. This plan may involve a variety of components, including further testing (e.g., endoscopy, lab tests), medicines, psychological treatments focused on coping and pain management, and/or biofeedback training. We also may refer to specialists in other areas (e.g., therapeutic massage, physical therapy, asthma/allergy), as needed.

Is there anything I need to do before my first visit?

You will be asked to complete a detailed history form online prior to your child's first appointment. Please take the time to complete this form as accurately and completely as possible. This information will be reviewed by our staff in preparation for your visit and helps us to serve you most efficiently. Staff will ask you any questions remaining at the time of your child's clinic visit.

Child History Form

For families with a scheduled appointment in the abdominal pain clinic, please to view, complete, and print this online history form.

What should I bring with me to my first visit?

To help us treat your child effectively, please bring copies of any previous test results with you to your child's evaluation visit.

If your child has had a scope in the past, it would be helpful for us to review the results prior to your child's first visit to the APC. Please call the office of the physician who did the scope and request that the pathologist send the biopsy slides (not just the pathology report) to:
