Why Cereal Drives Matter    Did you have breakfast this morning? If you did not, was it because you chose not to eat?  Sadly, many people do not have a choice in whether they have breakfast or not.  Many know upon going to bed that they will not have that choice upon arising.  the choices they have may be limited to which meal or meals they will have to go without.  For many Children, the only meals they can count on are the free and reduced-priced meals provided through school breakfast and lunch programs.  But during the summer months, while school is not in session, the only thing those children can count on is being hungry.  Excuse me; what I mean to say is hungrier.  But it does not have to be that way.  Here is your chance to give those children and families a choice. Hunger continues to be an ongoing crisis and Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics' involvement in addressing hunger continues to be an ongoing effort.  We have had numerous food drives over the years and although those food drives were successful, hunger continues. The Nurse Professional Excellence Council of Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics are coordinating another food drive, specifically for breakfast cereal.  Why cereal?  First off, kids love cereal.  It is a non-perishable food that is nutrient dense, often fortified with vitamins and minerals.  It also promotes milk consumption.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, 41% of milk consumed by 6-12 year olds is consumed with cereal. The cereal drive is organized in cooperation with Harvesters.  Harvesters is the area's only food bank.  Their network includes more than 620 non-profit agencies though out a 26-county direct service area, including emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, children's homes, homes for the mentally disabled and shelters for battered persons.  Harvesters' network provides food assistance to as many as 66,000 people each week.  Harvesters is a certified member of Feeding America, a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks, serving all 50 states.  Harvesters was named Feeding America's "food Bank of the Year" for 2011. Multiple Harvesters barrels will be conveniently placed at the CMH Main Campus, CMH South, CM-East, CM-West, CM-North and CM-Broadway Clinics until June 8th.  Monetary donations are also accepted. Get ReadyHere Comes Magnet! Get ready, because in just one week the Magnet appraisers will be doing their onsite evaluation.  On a rational level most people know there is no reason to fret over the visit.  Despite that, most people also feel the common anxiety that is natural whenever they are put on stage.  Make no doubt; we are in fact being evaluated daily by patients and families we care for, the community we serve, and by ourselves.  We have never felt inhibited by that knowledge and we should not feel inhibited by the presence of the Magnet appraisers. What Magnet appraisers offer us is an opportunity to proudly display the values and accomplishments that we as an institution have achieved and to acknowledge the value Children's Mercy places on us as individuals.  So use that opportunity to brag on what we do as an organization, what you do as an employee, and how it has impacted and improved the lives of our patients, our colleagues, and ourselves. Things to remember: Show and tell!  Remember kindergarten and what fun it was to share.  Take a cue from our patient population.  Kids know and show enthusiasm.  Show and tell what a wonderful place that Children's Mercy is for patients and employees!  Make the patient and nursing satisfaction surveys and quality improvement projects some of the things you share. Be relaxed and be confident.  It is a conversation, not an interrogation.  If you get nervous, that's okay.  Take a moment, recognize it, take a breath, and carry on. Be honest.  Answer the appraisers' questions truthfully and to the best of your ability.  If you are unable to answer something, say so and provide other resources that can answer the question. If you are unsure of a question the appraiser is asking, request that they clarify. If you see someone in need, help out if you can.  One of the reasons we are such a great organization and have received Magnet recognition before is because we work as a team. Trust the situation.  Trust in yourself, your colleagues, your hospital AND the Magnet appraisers.  Everyone wants this process to be successful. Remember our Professional Practice Model.  Here is the definition posted on the Scope: "Our Nursing Professional Practice Model is depicted as a compass because it represents a guide for nursing practice at the Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics.  The Quality Caring Model sits in the center as it serves as the theoretical framework for the Nursing Department.  The external circle includes the Nursing Vision Statement and the Hospital Mission Statement demonstrating that nursing is aligned with the core principles and mission of the organization.  The four directional vectors of the compass represent four essential influences on professional nursing practice: Ethos, Environment, Ethics and Equity.  Finally, the remaining quadrants link the Nursing Vision Statement to the Professional Practice Model by illustrating the four key components that drive nursing practice at Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics: Care Delivery System, Leadership and Governance, Innovation, and Professional Development." Send A Message About Giving  The Healthier Ever After Employee Campaign Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics are very fortunate to be the recipient of many gifts and donations.  Our community recognizes our worth and the vital role we play in the health and well being of our most vulnerable citizens.  Some donors give cash to be used at our discretion, while others specify which department, service or even equipment that they wish to support.  Others give "gifts in kind" which are donations of goods or services free of charge.  And some give the simple and valuable gift of time and advocacy.  Go to any area, any department and you are likely to see some of those donors.  They are here each and every day wearing a Children's Mercy Hospital ID and working by your side. These employees recognize that the 'Healthier Ever After Employee Campaing' is an opportunity to give beyond the work that they do everyday at Children's Mercy.  They have helped build our hospitals and clinics as well as The Lisa Barth Interfaith Chapel.  Their donations have supported the purchase of needed equipment, research and Nursing Scholarships.  Your donation  can support one or more of 15 areas to choose from. There will be numerous campaign kick-offs where you can get a piece of free pizza and a drink.  While you are there you can sign up to make a one-time gift or you can make an ongoing pledge using payroll deduction.  Know that the simple pleasure of giving and making a difference isn't the only thing you get.  You will also be automatically entered for a chance to win a day of Paid Time Off (PTO) as well as  pair of tickets to this year's Big Slick Celebrity Poker Tournament and Party on Saturday, June 23.
